Phog was packed and the stage was set for the first ever Black Girls Rock; a night that celebrated the talent of black women from both Windsor, Detroit and it's surrounding areas.
The evening began with a moving set of songs from Windsor's own Tony Coates and he was followed by Diamondancer, who's music and vocals had the audience on their feet and grooving. Diamondancer took the stage a second time and left the audience roaring in appreciation of her powerful and humorous poetry.
The night was not limited to music and poetry, Chaylene 'Chaykit' come out and truly had our jaws on the floor and our hips swaying as she showed us how it was done by belly dancing to Biggie.
The night was hosted by myself, Amina Abdulle and I went on to share some of my own poems. Poets to grace the stage included Elle, a Toronto native who has blessed Windsor with her brand of hard hitting and emotion packed poetry. Get Christie Love is a Michigan based poet who has been visiting Windsor for years and blessing Canadians with her honest and moving poetry and she truly laid it down for Phog. A new singer to join for the night was the lovely Venus Sky who, despite technical difficulties, was able to serenade everyone with her smooth and powerful vocals. Another singer of the night was the one and only, Kat Moscone, a young artist who sang her heart out and play a mean piano! The audience couldn't help but adore her!
The feature of the night for Black Girls Rock was One Single Rose a.k.a Rosemarie Wilson. A well established and acclaimed Michigan singer and poetess, One Single Rose took to the stage and truly rocked! She sang and she told us how it was and we were better for having experienced it.
All these women and our token dude helped end 2014 on a high and made the night one to truly remember!
I would like to thank the wonderful people at Phog for having us, my assistant Shukri Abdulle for working the door and keeping me sane and to Jamie Baxter for taking such great pictures. I would also like to extend a big thank you to each person that came out to the show, thank you for your love and your support, the night would not be possible without you!
Peace,
Amina :)
